"Seeing Double in Mildura"With so many names on the program for the 2004 Mildura Country Music Festival, a keen eye was needed to track your favourite artists. You can keep tabs on them now, via their Websites. DONNA FISK, with musical partner MICHAEL CRISTIAN, was celebrating a hat-trick award win at the 2004 Telstra Country Wide Southern Stars and they were enjoying chart success with the title track of their album, The Big Picture. Donna is pictured here with namesake DONNA BOYD, who was in fine form after her successful UK tour and charting with several singles from her album All Roads, both at home and abroad. Toyota Star Maker TRAVIS COLLINS was winning smiles all over town with his prodigious talents and he met up with TRAVIS LIST, who was promoting his CD Broken Hearted Hotline. Travis List was also making a guest appearance at the Cowboy Roundup at River Ridge Guest Ranch in Springville, California last month, while Travis Collins was on tour with Melinda Schneider, performing his debut release, Bridge That You Won't Burn.
KELLY BLACK recently won Independent EP of the Year at the Tasmania/New Zealand Song writing Awards with her debut CD Pilgrim. Pictured here, she teams up in the greenery with KELLY LLEWELLYN whose reputation grew considerably after being part of the legendary Brian Young Show, touring extensively throughout remote outback Australia. Kelly later built on that success with her single Crying My Heart Out.
Mr. Versatile, CRAIG GILES came down from the Southern Riverina town of Finley, NSW, and CRAIG BYRNE came down from Sydney to be at the festival. While they didn't perform their full 'Craigs In Stereo' show, Craig Giles did appear on one of Craig Byrnes' shows. I told you it got complicated! Until next time, happy surfing! |
DVD REVIEW
DOLLY PARTON had not toured America in over 10 years when she took her Halos & Horns album on the road. In December 2002, that tour brought her home to her own
Dollywood Theatre in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. It was there that this show was captured live over two successive nights. Dolly is backed by her band from that album, the Blue-niques, who play bluegrass like they mean it and keep the music high and their star well grounded. Dolly herself, after three particularly bluegrass-tinged albums in a row, shows her mountain roots proudly. Beneath the glitz and glamour of the showbiz starlet, there beats an Appalachian heart indeed.
As well as the heartfelt songs from those albums, The Grass Is Blue, Little Sparrow and Halos & Horns, no Dolly concert would be complete without the hits that include Jolene, Coat Of Many Colors and 9 TO 5, revamped here into acoustic arrangements. An a cappella medley of other hits, such as Islands In The Stream and Here You Come Again, is particularly effective. Not surprisingly there is plenty of Dolly's down-home humour and tales of growing up in the Smoky Mountains. This DVD is Dolly's first and only official concert DVD release making it a must for every Dolly Parton fan!
Also available as a 2-CD audio version at a single CD price.
