"Over Achievers"Last month, Sydney Country Music Week came to a climax with the glittering Australian Country Music Achiever Awards. Now we surf to the Websites of just some of the winners, such as SARA STORER who gained another addition to her trophy shelf. The newly dubbed ‘Entertainer of the Year’ has plenty to include in her site these days, so look for photos, glowing reviews and replays of radio interviews. The ‘Independent Entertainer of the Year’ award went to CARTER & CARTER for the third year running. Merelyn and David must be headed for some sort of trophy record of their own. Also of interest, their new CD single Play That Song is packed with not only music, but also 3 video clips and a screensaver for their fans’ computers. The COUNTRY MUSIC STORE made a hat-trick as well as Country Music Retailer of the Year. A visit to their on-line store shows why their comprehensive catalogue of Australian music has made them the number one destination for shoppers around the globe. Now you can also read biographies of many of our country music pioneers, in the section devoted to their new label BELLBIRD MUSIC that is re-releasing classic titles from the Hadley Records stable. Co-owner Ron Adsett is pictured below with award presenters Bella.
COUNTRY MUSIC CHANNEL took home the Media Achiever of the Year title. CMC has boomed since becoming available for city folk on Foxtel Digital and they cover many of the big country events in Australia. Program Director Tim Daley is pictured here with Lachlan and Hamish Davidson.
THE DAVIDSON BROTHERS played up a storm on stage during the Achiever Awards ceremony. This month they represent Australia at the IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Fanfest in Louisville, Kentucky. This is one of the biggest bluegrass events held in the USA, hosting the 2004 International Bluegrass Awards. |
DVD REVIEWS
We haven’t heard a lot about Larry Gatlin and his brothers, Steve and Rudy since they ‘retired’ from the road in 1992. Now they are back touring on a smaller scale and are currently sharing the stage with Pam Tillis in Branson. This DVD however, was recorded live last year at The Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and finds Larry’s voice in fine form. It also features the exceptional family harmonies that make their combined sound so unique. There is a lot of corny-but-cute talk, often light-heartedly at the expense of the audience, but the inspirational music includes Broken Lady and Help Me, plus All the Gold in California and I Don't Wanna Cry.

GLEN CAMPBELL One from the archives this time, with the Rhinestone Cowboy himself appearing on-stage in Dublin back in 1981. GLEN CAMPBELL performs most of his big hits here, spanning from Gentle On My Mind, through to Southern Nights. In between he touches on his roots with a nod to Bob Wills (Milk Cow Blues) and Hank Williams (I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry) while band-member Carl Jackson provides a brief bluegrass interlude on the banjo. The blockbusters Wichita Lineman, Galveston and By The Time I Get To Phoenix are all here too, plus the obligatory appearance of the bagpipes!
