Cowboys In Cyberspace - January 2004

"GOT MY HAT ON..."

...got my PC on too, as we head to Tamworth
via the Internet Super Highway.

Two legendary music venues in Sydney recently provided the publicity springboard for the forthcoming TAMWORTH festival. At The Basement club, TELSTRA showed off some of the technology that they will put to good use during the Telstra Country Music Festival in January by webcasting the launch itself, including a live link to the Mayor of Tamworth City, Councillor James Treloar.

MICHAEL CARR, CATHERINE BRITT, FELICITY

Music stars MICHAEL CARR, CATHERINE BRITT, FELICITY (pictured above) and ADAM BRAND were all on hand to help the cause. Jessica MauboyHoping to follow in their footsteps was young JESSICA MAUBOY (pictured right), winner of the Darwin heat of the Telstra Road To Tamworth competition, who sang for everyone who logged on to the event. TELSTRA will be Webcasting many performances live from Tamworth during the Festival.

SARA STORER and JOHN WILLIAMSON

Soon after, at the Sydney Opera House, JOHN WILLIAMSON was joined by NSW Premier BOB CARR to announce the finalists in the TOYOTA 2004 Golden Guitar Awards. Radio personality JOHN LAWS spoke eloquently about Country Music while reigning Vocalists of the Year MELINDA SCHNEIDER and TROY CASSAR-DALEY sang in golden form. SARA STORER was there to receive an unprecedented 8 finalist nominations including 4 for Raining On the Plains, her duet with JOHN WILLIAMSON (with whom she is pictured above). The TOYOTA Web site features the Golden Guitar Awards, Starmaker and FanFest, and also focuses on the full week of shows held at the Toyota Country Theatre in the TREC (Tamworth Regional Entertainment Centre).

FANFEST also has its own Web site this year and it's just one of the many collected links relating to the TAMWORTH FESTIVAL that are waiting for you HERE at the COWBOYS IN CYBERSPACE site.

Until next time, happy surfing!

JOHN MCEUEN &
JIMMY IBBOTSON -
NITTY GRITTY SURROUND

Special Guest Artist - Jennifer Warnes
AIX Records via Rockian Trading

For me, as a young lad, playing the vinyl LP of Uncle Charlie & His Dog Teddy by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on a portable record player was a near spiritual experience. By contrast, this latest release from key NGDB members JOHN MCEUEN & JIMMY IBBOTSON is wrapped in such an abundance of technology that one might fear for the music contained inside. Worry not, for these masters have embraced the medium and made it their own. Indeed, JOHN MCEUEN was an early adopter of the now frequent trend of including video on a CD, so this is a logical extension for him. This double-sided disc, which was awarded the highest honour at the First Surround Sound DVD Music Awards, contains various mixes of the music, a multiple camera angle video of the session, plus interviews with the band and guests. Audiophiles with a DVD-Audio Player can also experience 96 kHz/24 bit hi-fidelity sound.

JOHN MCEUEN gracefully leads his masterful acoustic band The String Wizards through a wide range of material from bluegrass to bop to bossa nova. Combined with the wit of JIMMY IBBOTSON, a partnership that has endured over three decades so far, they bring us yet more moments of musical magic. Special guest Jennifer Warnes lends her angelic voice to several songs while Laurie Lewis also shows her versatility and verve alongside fellow bluegrass giant Tom Rozum. Featured in the band is the talented Jonathan McEuen (John's son) proving that the Circle does indeed remain Unbroken.
