WAYLON JENNINGS sang his life in his songs and that makes these albums as much a tribute to the man as to his music. LONESOME, ON'RY AND MEAN emerged a year and a half after Waylon's passing and has now been followed by I'VE ALWAYS BEEN CRAZY. Both are all-star affairs, lovingly executed and genuinely heart-felt. Inevitably the two albums invite comparison not only with each other (indeed 8 songs appear on both albums by different artists) but also with Waylon's original versions.

Some tracks shoot for the faithful and reverent tribute: Junior Brown provides a rendition of Nashville Rebel that is uncannily like the Waylon cut while Kenny Chesney teams with Detroit bad boy Kid Rock for Luckenbach, Texas (Back To The Basics Of Love), recorded in the early hours of the morning with Waylon's spirit in the air. In another duet, Deana Carter and Sara Evans make Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys a genuine maternal plea.

Allison Moorer tugs at the heartstrings on her achingly emotional version of Storms Never Last, while Waylon's wife and soul mate Jessi Colter gives the same song a more rollicking yet no less soulful treatment of that same song which she wrote and performed often with Waylon. Ben Harper adds tasty slide guitar to Waymore's Blues while The Crickets version of the song completes the circle between themselves, Buddy Holly and Waylon.

Hank Williams Jr takes Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line and makes it his own as Waylon did himself in the past. In the spirit of family tradition, the band Stargunn rock through I've Always Been Crazy with Jessi and Waylon's son, Shooter Jennings at the helm.

Other highlights across the two albums include Nora Jones who sings Wurlitzer Prize (I Don't Want To Get Over You) with understated honesty and finally Waylon Jennings himself with his own composition The Dream, the last track he recorded.

Both albums hit the mark and unless you have a preference towards either line-up of performers, you might just need them both. Waylon was a musical outlaw and a giant of his time and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations as much as they have these friends here.
